Description
This project is designed to foment the reuse of water by industry. This water is to be supplied by unconventional means, namely by reclaiming waste water from EDAR, which will make it possible to cut down on water consumption from more conventional sources.
The aim of LIFE WIRE is to demonstrate the feasibility of combining a range of cutting-edge techniques like ultrafiltration (UF), filtration using nanostructured carbon materials and/or inverse osmosis (IO) to reclaim municipal wastewater to produce water of a quality that meets the needs of a range of industrial processes. Among the industrial uses for this water are the preparation of chemical reagents, cleaning, refrigeration, cogeneration, boilers, cleaning of filters, etc.
LIFE WIRE is a demonstration project with 50% co-funding from the European Commission provided through the LIFE + Programme. The project began in October 2013 and is slated to be completed in September 2017.
The CETaqua Water Technology Centre is acting as the project's coordinator, and the other partners involved are Aigües de Barcelona - Empresa Metropolitana de Gestió del Cicle de l'Aigua Integral, SA, which is implementing the pilot plan at its EDAR facilities in El Prat de Llobregat, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area's Laboratory (AMB), which is carrying out all the chemical and microbiological analyses needed to assess the effectiveness of the various treatments being studied, and the companies ARCHROMA, ECOIMSA i TACSA, which are assessing the feasibility of the industrial use of this water.
